About Us  ·  Northern Builder Co-op LLC

We Build Places to Live.

A design–build company in Saint Michael, Minnesota — carrying residential projects from first drawing to final walkthrough.

Northern Builder Co-op LLC is a full-service residential design–build company. We design, price, permit, and build — and we stand behind the result under one name and one agreement.

Design–build means a single team is accountable for your project from the first conversation through design, engineering, permitting, construction, and warranty. There is one plan, one budget, and one point of contact. When a question comes up mid-project, no one is waiting on a designer to answer for a builder, or a builder to answer for a designer.

The company was founded in Saint Michael in 2022 by Jeffrey Covert, together with co-founders David Joas and David Anderson. It remains privately held and owner-operated: the people who signed the agreement are the same people who answer the phone, price the work, and walk the site.

Design | Build | Love

Three words define how this company operates. Each one carries a specific obligation.

Design
Drawings, selections, and a real budget are settled before demolition begins. Planning is the least expensive place to change your mind, and we treat it that way.
Build
Our own crew, supported by trade partners we have worked with for years. Licensed, insured, permitted, and inspected — built to the standard we would accept in our own homes.
Love
Candor, on schedule and on cost, including when the news is unwelcome. Clients are told what we find when we open a wall, and what it means, the day we find it.

The Standards We Hold

The commitments below are not written for a website. They are drawn from the operating standards every member of this company agrees to.

  • The client comes firstOur stated mission is the continuous improvement of our ability to meet our clients' needs and exceed their expectations at every opportunity. Clients are not dependent on us; we are dependent on them, and we run the business accordingly.
  • Our team is a partnershipWe hold that the company and the people who work in it constitute a cooperative partnership — a workplace that treats them fairly, with respect and dignity, so they can give their best effort to your project. Well-treated crews build well-built homes.
  • Safety is a discipline, not a posterThe health and wellbeing of our people is foremost among our concerns. Every employee is required to attend safety meetings and to correct or report unsafe conditions — on a jobsite that is, in most cases, someone's home.
  • Your home is treated as your homeCourtesy toward clients, neighbors, suppliers, and one another is the responsibility of every employee. A client's property is never borrowed, used, or put at risk, and the site is left in a condition we would accept ourselves.
  • We answer to this communityWe are a community-minded member of the area we build in, and every person here carries a share of the responsibility for the reputation this company has earned in these towns.
You will always know where your project stands.Every client receives access to a project portal carrying the schedule, daily logs, selections, proposals, change orders, and invoices — reviewed and approved online. Decisions are documented, costs are visible before they are incurred, and nothing about your project has to be reconstructed from memory.

What We Build

New Construction

  • Custom new homes
  • Structural insulated panel (SIP) and volumetric construction
  • Accessory dwelling units, studios, and shops
  • Additions and four-season rooms
  • Basement finishes

Remodel & Exterior

  • Kitchens and bathrooms
  • Whole-home and basement remodels
  • Decks, porches, and patios
  • Siding, roofing, windows, and doors
  • Garages and restoration work

Alongside traditional framing, we hold a working specialty in SIP and volumetric construction — a building method that delivers a tighter, better-insulated envelope and a shorter time to weathertight, which matters a great deal in a Minnesota build season.

Local Knowledge, Built In

“We live here. We build here. We know what this ground does in April.”

Every permit office, every inspector, every frost-depth requirement, every HOA quirk from Minnetonka to St. Michael — we have navigated them, and we carry that knowledge into your project from day one.

We are headquartered in Saint Michael and work throughout the northwest Twin Cities metro corridor. That is not a marketing claim — it is where our crew lives, where our kids go to school, and where we have built relationships with the inspectors, suppliers, and trade partners who make a project run on time.

Minnetonka & WayzataEstablished lakeside neighborhoods with mature trees, tight setbacks, and HOA design review. We know how to get approvals here without surprises.
Plymouth & Maple GroveHigh-growth suburbs with active permit offices and strict inspection schedules. Our documentation keeps projects moving without re-inspections.
Rogers, Otsego & St. MichaelWright County communities where we are headquartered. We know the local inspectors by name and understand the rural-to-suburban zoning transitions.
Champlin, Dayton & CorcoranRapidly developing areas where lot conditions vary widely. Our site assessment process catches soil and drainage issues before they become change orders.

Our team is deeply familiar with the permitting processes, zoning regulations, and building codes unique to Hennepin and Wright County communities — including Champlin, Osseo, Hanover, and the growing corridor between them. If your project sits outside that range, tell us anyway. We will give you a direct answer about whether we are the right firm for it.

Minnesota build season is real. Frost depth here runs 42–60 inches. Footings, slab prep, and exterior work all have windows that don't forgive a slow permit or a late material order. We plan around the calendar from the first conversation — not after the contract is signed.

Our commitment, stated plainly.

To our clients: the continuous improvement of our ability to meet your needs and exceed your expectations at every opportunity.

To our team: a work environment that treats them fairly, with respect and dignity, so they can give their best effort to the work.

Those two commitments are inseparable, and honoring both is what allows this company to deliver homes its clients are glad they built.
